A Content Management System (CMS) is used to separate the content of a website from the way the appearance of the website is designed. While a database stores the content, a template defines the design of the site.  As in CMS the code and content of the website are kept apart, changes can be made in the contents of the website by use of a word processor without tinkering with the web design which requires skilled intervention. CMS is however not appropriate for websites that do not need to change contents off and on as it is too complex a system to install for a conventional website. Sites that require complex functionalities like frequent change in contents or venturing into ecommerce need CMS.
